The Match Factory Girl allows us to focus on some of the characteristics that are specific to the Finish film maker Aki Kaurismäki. The use of silence as a means of dialogue between the audience and the image. The use of framing to emphasis the narration or the presence of ellipses to give greater depth and symbolism to each shot. These are some of the details that stay with the viewer and at the same time allow us to see up close the originality of our author

In these documents, marriage was legally adjustedwith economic, political, social and cultural aspects reflected in them, which can be useful for historians to make not only a closer approach to the aristocracy of that time but to specific noble houses and lineages as well. In the 1642 marriage settlements that regulated the wedding between Gaspar Téllez-Girón and Feliche Gómez de Sandovalwe can see the characteristics that defined that kind of documents while, at the same time, we see the economic and political situation that the House of Osuna and the House of Uceda were going through in the mid 17th centur

Under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license to their work.Optical absorption and magnetic susceptibility data of the Zn1-xMnxGa2Se4 family of compounds have been collected in the temperature range 10-300 K. One of the most interesting aspects of this series is the availability of samples in the whole composition range, in contrast with most diluted magnetic semiconductors that are only miscible in a limited range of compositions. Temperature-independent absorption bands with maxima at 2.33, 2.49, and 2.66 eV have been found that are assigned to electron transitions from the 6A1 ground state to the 4T1, 4T2, and 4A1, or 4E excited states of the Mn++ ion in a tetrahedral crystalline field. The optical spectra exhibit a temperature dependent absorption edge in the 350-600 nm region that corresponds to a direct band gap. The band gap energy has been determined as a function of atomic concentration and temperature. At room temperature, the variation of the energy gap Eg with the Mn content shows a rather anomalous behavior that consists of an initial decrease for x0.5. An analogous evolution of Eg with x is found when decreasing temperature. Such behavior has been compared with that reported for analogous systems. The variation of Eg with temperature follows Varshni's relation for all compositions. A monotonie increase of the magnetic susceptibility with x is found within the whole range of Mn content. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.Financial support from CICYT (MAT97-951), DGA (Comunidad Trabajo Pirineos 97-98), and CAI+DGA (Programa Europa) is also acknowledged.Peer Reviewe

Internal branding at university: Do tenure and job security matter?

Universities, as educational service providers, must pay attention to their employees who are pivotal in delivering and communicating brand promise and service quality to the stakeholders. While branding initiatives most frequently focus on external stakeholders, internal branding efforts establish systems/processes and consequent employees’ behaviour that are consistent with external branding efforts. With a sample of 753 faculty members and researchers from a Spanish public University, the study aims to establish if employee tenure and job security have a significant relationship with employees’ brand commitment and employees’ brand supporting behaviour. An analysis of variance was carried out for testing the hypothesis. Differences were found according to tenure in employees’ brand commitment while job security did not impact significantly on employees’ brand commitment. In addition, a positive and significant relationship were found between employees’ brand supporting behaviour and tenure, but not for job security. For business practitioners, this research state that it is essential for service companies, such as universities, to use differing approaches to employees according to their organisational tenure as an important managerial implication.Retamosa, M.; Millán, Á.; García, JA.; Millán, M. Reuse of Spanish civil war air-raid shelters in Alicante: the R46 Balmis and R31 Seneca shelter

    Get PDF
More than a hundred public air-raid shelters were constructed beneath Alicante during the Spanish Civil war. Their architectural uniqueness and humanitarian purpose render these shelters a tangible testament to our recent history. The Alicante Municipal Archives hold reports written by technicians who inspected the shelters in the 1940s, which were subsequently included in the Special Plan for public shelters in 1953. Half a century later, in 2003, information on the air-raid shelters was included in another Special Plan aimed at protecting Alicante’s archaeological heritage. Thanks to the work of the Municipal Heritage Conservation unit (COPHIAM) and the Special Protection Plan for Urban Archaeology (PEPA), the exact or approximate locations were identified for almost 90% of the shelters known to have existed. This paper describes interventions in two of these architectural spaces using advanced museology techniques. The first concerns air-raid shelter R46, located in the Plaza del Dr. Balmis in the city centre. This was built in 1938, and is rectangular with two entrances. The second is air-raid shelter R31, located in the Plaza Séneca

NtoM: a concept of operations for pilots of multiple remotely piloted aircraft

    Get PDF
The concept of operations proposed here pursues the feasibility, from a human factors perspective, of having a single pilot/aircrew controlling several remotely piloted aircraft systems at once in non-segregated airspace. To meet such feasibility, this multitasking must be safe and not interfere with the job of the air traffic controllers due to delays or errors associated with parallel piloting. To that end, a set of measures at several levels is suggested, which includes workload prediction and balance, pilot activity monitoring, and a special emphasis on interface usability and the pilot’s situational awareness. The concept relies greatly on the exploitation of the potential of Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications, anticipating future widespread implementation and full use. Experiments comparing the performance of the same pseudo-pilots before and after the implementation of part of the measures showed a decrease in the number of errors, oversights and subjective stress.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Minimal formulation of the linear spatial analysis of capillary jets: Validity of the two-mode approach

    Get PDF
A rigorous and complete formulation of the linear evolution of harmonically stimulated capillary jets should include infinitely many spatial modes to account for arbitrary exit conditions [J. Guerrero et al., J. Fluid Mech. 702, 354 (2012)]. However, it is not rare to find works in which only the downstream capillary dominant mode, the sole unstable one, is retained, with amplitude determined by the jet deformation at the exit. This procedure constitutes an oversimplification, unable to handle a flow rate perturbation without jet deformation at the exit (the most usual conditions). In spite of its decaying behavior, the other capillary mode (subdominant) must be included in what can be called a “minimal linear formulation.” Deformation and mean axial velocity amplitudes at the jet exit are the two relevant parameters to simultaneously find the amplitudes of both capillary modes. Only once these amplitudes are found, the calculation of the breakup length may be eventually simplified by disregarding the subdominant mode. Simple recipes are provided for predicting the breakup length, which are checked against our own numerical simulations. The agreement is better than in previous attempts in the literature. Besides, the limits of validity of the linear formulation are explored in terms of the exit velocity amplitude, the wave number, the Weber number, and the Ohnesorge number. Including the subdominant mode extends the range of amplitudes for which the linear model gives accurate predictions, the criterion for keeping this mode being that the breakup time must be shorter than a given formula. It has been generally assumed that the shortest intact length happens for the stimulation frequency with the highest growth rate. However, we show that this correlation is not strict because the amplitude of the dominant mode has a role in the breakup process and it depends on the stimulation frequency.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad, Spain, under Contract No. FIS2014-25161Junta de Andalucía under Contract No. P11-FQM-791

Tell me what you study and where you live! Exploring the role that these aspects play when choosing a university

[EN] Previous literature on students’ decisions and choices regarding universities contains a large number of factors that influence these process. This research focuses on two of these factors and its aim is twofold. First, it is analyses how prospective students’ study areas impact on the relative importance of different university selection criteria. Second, it examines whether the environment of residence (i.e., the size of the municipality) leads to differences in these criteria. The results obtained from a sample of 605 prospective university students who live in the Spanish region of Castilla-La Mancha allowed us to conclude that there were significant differences in most of the selection criteria according to the field of study and the size of the municipality (i.e., five and six out of nine criteria, respectively). Some practical implications for the design of segmentation strategies and communication campaigns in the context of higher education institutions are presented in this work.Retamosa, M.; Millán, Á.; García, JA.
